The best file to use for engraving is a file where surfaces and lines are described by vectors. These files have the advantage that the content can be infinitely enlarged without losing quality. Illustrator or the free Inkscape are programs with which such drawings can be generated.

The alternative is a file where surfaces and lines are described by means of pixels. A good engraving result requires that the density (resolution) of the pixels is high enough, preferably 300 dpi. Such an image can no longer be infinitely enlarged without compromising on quality.
